Not surprisingly, boiling or steaming brussels leads to a pretty unappetizing taste. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all seriousness, you probably can\u2019t go wrong but I have to say\u2026 this recipe is my favorite way to enjoy brussels sprouts. Add some bacon and complimentary sweet flavors and you\u2019ve got yourself a winner.&nbsp;<\/span>They also make for a delicious Thanksgiving side!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-maple-bacon-brussels-sprouts-ingredients\"><strong>Maple Bacon Brussels Sprouts Ingredients<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Brussels sprout<\/strong> &#8211; 2 pounds brussel sprouts (instructions for prepping below)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Oranges<\/strong> &#8211; you want the rind, zest + juice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bacon<\/strong> &#8211; 1\/2 pound bacon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maple syrup<\/strong> &#8211; 2 tablespoons maple syrup. You&#8217;ll drizzle this into the cast iron when roasting brussels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Red wine vinegar<\/strong> &#8211; for balancing acidity and finishing dish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Red chili flakes<\/strong> &#8211; optional but adds a nice kick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-prep-maple-bacon-brussel-sprouts\"><strong>How to Prep Maple Bacon Brussel Sprouts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First things first, let\u2019s chat about picking out the best brussels sprouts at the store! If you ever see sprouts on a stalk, grab them! These will stay the freshest, the longest. Keep them on the stalk until you\u2019re ready to use them. If you don\u2019t see stalks there are usually two other options in the store: prepackaged brussels sprouts or sprouts sold in bulk. Either works great, just be sure to look for firm, green sprouts without holes or major discoloration.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re ready to prep them, give them a good rinse in a colander. Use a paring knife to cut off the bottom, hard stem. Remove any discolored or shriveled outer leaves. Remove the rind of one orange using a paring knife. Try to just get the rind and not much of the pith (the bitter white layer).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>STEP 2: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juice the orange that you peeled and set aside. Zest the second orange and set the zest aside.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>STEP 3:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chop the bacon into bite sized pieces and cook in a single layer in cast iron pan over medium high heat until you have crisp bacon pieces. Remove the bacon pieces and place on a paper towel lined plate. Pour the bacon grease into a small bowl or jar and set aside.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>STEP 4:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Prep brussels sprouts according to instructions above if you haven\u2019t already. Place the brussels, orange rind and juice, 6 tablespoons of bacon fat, chili flakes and maple syrup into the cast iron skillet. Season with salt and pepper and roast at 425\u00baF for 40 minutes, stir halfway through. Brussels are ready when they are tender.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>STEP 5: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the brussels are nice and crispy, remove from the oven and finish by adding the red wine vinegar, orange zest and bacon pieces. Toss everything together and serve.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-if-i-don-t-have-a-cast-iron-skillet\"><strong>What if I Don\u2019t Have a Cast Iron Skillet?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can still make these brussels sprouts if you don\u2019t have a cast iron skillet. Start by cooking your slices bacon in the oven with this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehealthymaven.com\/how-to-cook-bacon-in-the-oven\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easy tutorial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After the bacon is roasted, spread the brussels sprout mixture on a rimmed baking sheet and cook for the same amount of time as listed above. They&#8217;re best immediately after cooking but you can reheat them on the stovetop or in the microwave. They most likely won&#8217;t be crispy though! Zest the second orange and set the zest to the side.<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-4\" style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chop the bacon into bite size pieces and cook in a cast iron pan over medium high heat until you have crispy bacon pieces. Remove the crispy bacon pieces and place on a towel lined plate. Pour the bacon fat into a small bowl or jar and set aside. *see note above for cooking bacon in the oven<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-5\" style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wash and dry the brussels sprouts and trim the ends and halve them. <\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-6\" style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Place the brussels, orange rind and juice, 6 tbsp bacon fat (or whatever amount your bacon has rendered if less than that), chili flakes and maple syrup back into the cast iron skillet or onto a baking sheet. <\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-7\" style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Season with salt and pepper and place in the oven. Roast for about 40 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the brussels are nice and crispy. <\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-8\" style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finish by adding the red wine vinegar and orange zest and bacon pieces.
